MAESTRO’S Mosaic Starter Course: A Creative Introduction to Glass and Found Object Mosaics

Duration: 4 hours (Saturday morning @ SONPARK – MAESTRO’S MOSAIC STUDIO)

Course Overview – This hands-on workshop is designed for absolute beginners who want to explore the art of mosaics. Participants will learn the basics of working with glass mosaic tiles and incorporating broken or found objects into their designs. By the end of the session, each student will have completed a small mosaic project to take home.

• Pre-cut glass mosaic tiles
• Inserts
• Mosaic adhesive
• Mosaic base (Pre- cut wooden board)
• Grout
• Tools

9:00 AM – 9:30 AM: Welcome and Introduction

• Welcome and Icebreaker: Brief introductions and overview of the day.
• What is Mosaic Art? A short discussion on the history and techniques of mosaics.
• Safety First: Tips for handling glass, tools, and adhesives safely.

9:30 AM – 10:15 AM: Designing Your Mosaic

• Design Basics: Learn about color, texture, and pattern in mosaic art.
• Choosing Your Base: Select a base
• Sketching Your Design: Create a simple design or pattern to guide your work.

10:15 AM – 11:30 AM: Creating Your Mosaic

• Cutting and Shaping Tiles: Demonstration on how to use nippers to cut glass tiles and found objects.
• Laying the Pieces: Apply adhesive and place tiles and found objects onto your base.
• Tips for Composition: Learn how to balance colours, textures, and spacing.

11:30 AM – 12:00 PM: Grouting and Finishing

• Grouting Basics: Learn how to apply and clean grout to finish your mosaic.
• Polishing Your Work: Final touches to make your mosaic shine.

12:00 PM – 12:30 PM: Show and Tell + Q&A

• Showcase Your Work: Share your completed mosaic with the group.
• Q&A Session: Ask questions about mosaics, materials, or techniques.
• Next Steps: Resources for further learning and inspiration.

What to Bring

• An apron or old clothes (mosaics can get messy!)
• Any special found objects you’d like to incorporate (optional)
